Burkina Faso / The fight against terrorism: victories on the ground and silence from ECOWAS
The fighting forces under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso have scored some notable successes in the fight against terrorism. Recent operations have led to the neutralisation of several terrorists and the recovery of a large arsenal in key areas of the country, notably in the North, Centre-North and East regions.
The Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP) from Bogandé carried out a heroic offensive in the village of Tipoli, near Bogandé.
This action resulted in the immediate neutralisation of several terrorists on the spot, and the capture of 2 others.
The booty recovered included 9 Kalashnikovs, 10 motorbikes, communications equipment, clothing and religious documents.
It is important to emphasise that these operations took place without any injuries to the fighting forces.
Their triumphant return to Bogandé was greeted by cheers and gestures of gratitude from the local population, in recognition of their courage and commitment to national security.
On 6 November 2023, the Kelbo fighting forces put up fierce resistance to an attack by around twenty terrorists.
Their determination forced the attackers to flee northwards under aerial surveillance.
When they stopped to treat their wounded, they were quickly neutralised.
In addition, reliable sources report that an operation carried out on 5 November 2023 thwarted a group of terrorists preparing to attack civilians in the Centre-Nord region.
The rapid intervention of airborne resources prevented an imminent attack, thereby ensuring the safety of the local population.
However, despite these notable victories and the undeniable efforts made by the Burkina Faso authorities to ensure stability and security, the reaction of ECOWAS and the international community remains disconcerting.
Instead of welcoming the progress made on the ground, threats of sanctions have been brandished against the authorities for failing to organise the elections.
It is crucial to stress that the priority in a country beset by major security challenges such as Burkina Faso should be the consolidation of stability and peace, before embarking on electoral processes.
The anti-terrorist operations currently underway are vital for preserving the lives of citizens and securing the regions affected by terrorism.
It is high time that the international community recognised Burkina Faso’s efforts and successes in its fight against terrorism and actively supported these actions, rather than threatening sanctions that could jeopardise the security of the region.
