South Africa denounces Israel before the UN, alleging violations of the genocide convention after Hamas attack

On Thursday 11 January, South Africa officially accused Israel of violating the United Nations Convention on Genocide.

This statement follows the Hamas attack on 7 October, which South Africa claims in no way justifies such serious alleged violations.

According to the South African authorities, Israel has violated the fundamental principles of the Genocide Convention, an international treaty aimed at preventing and punishing this heinous crime.

The statement highlights South Africa’s belief that Israel’s actions go beyond self-defence in response to the Hamas attack.

South Africa’s position also underlines the need for a thorough international investigation to shed light on the alleged violations of the Convention.

Tensions in the Middle East have often provoked international reactions, but this formal accusation by South Africa could intensify the pressure for an impartial assessment of events.

It should be noted that the issue of violation of the UN Genocide Convention is highly sensitive and may have significant political and diplomatic implications.

The next steps will depend on the responses of Israel and the international community to this formal accusation by South Africa.
