Chad launches stabilization project for Sudanese refugees and host Communities

The Chadian government, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has initiated a stabilization project aimed at supporting Sudanese refugees and their host communities. The program was officially launched on January 20 in Abéché, Ouaddaï province, by Fatima Haram Acyl, the Minister Delegate for Economy and Planning.

Focusing on the provinces of Ouaddaï, Sila, and Wadi Fira, the initiative seeks to address urgent humanitarian needs while bolstering the resilience of host populations.

These regions have absorbed over 910,000 Sudanese refugees and returnees since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan, resulting in significant humanitarian and economic challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Fatimé Boukar Kossei, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized the critical role of the project in safeguarding vulnerable populations.

“The plight of refugees seeking safety and dignity reminds us of our duty to protect the most vulnerable and tirelessly work towards offering them a brighter future,” she said.

The stabilization project aims to enhance the technical and structural capacities of government institutions while empowering the socio-economic resilience of affected communities.

It seeks to transition from emergency response to long-term development and stability.

Key components of the project include improved access to essential services, strengthened local infrastructure, and the promotion of economic self-sufficiency for both refugees and host communities.

This initiative reflects Chad’s commitment, alongside its partners, to addressing the consequences of the Sudanese conflict and paving the way for a more sustainable and hopeful future for those impacted.
