Togo: Agricultural census, a genuine strategic planning tool for food security

According to the initial findings of the 5th National Agricultural Census conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, significant challenges remain for the Togolese government, which has, for several years now, launched the so-called “Agricultural Revolution”. The ambition is to make agriculture a key driver of the country’s economy through its contribution to wealth creation in Togo.
This study highlights not only the difficulties and challenges but also the potential for a thriving agricultural sector. It will enable the Togolese state to plan future investments in agriculture. In other words, the results of the survey serve as a guide—a strategic reference—for planning projects in line with the government’s 2025 roadmap, with the ultimate goal of ensuring food security in the country.
Finally, this tool provides reliable data to help guide government actions in the rural sector. The country can therefore continue its efforts to modernize agriculture in order to address the challenges raised by the census—among them, low levels of mechanization, limited irrigation, and issues around land tenure security.
