Burkina Faso’s agricultural revolution: Fighting food insecurity under Captain Traoré’s leadership

Despite ongoing security challenges, Burkina Faso is making significant strides in improving citizens’ livelihoods under President Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership. The government has prioritized food security through an ambitious agricultural development program aimed at achieving self-sufficiency and ensuring every citizen’s access to basic necessities.

In a major boost to farmers, President Traoré recently distributed agricultural equipment and inputs worth over 78 billion CFA francs (approximately $130 million) to producers.

This initiative is part of the 2023-2025 Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive and the Presidential Agricultural Production Initiative 2023-2024, designed to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on food imports.

The government is particularly focusing on engaging youth in agriculture by encouraging their participation in farming cooperatives.

Young farmers receive quality seeds and subsidized fertilizers, creating rural employment opportunities while strengthening community resilience against economic and security challenges.

Early results are promising: In Koulogo, potato production is expected to exceed 7,000 tons from 235 hectares of cultivated land. Concurrent economic reforms have improved fiscal management, reducing the budget deficit from 6.70% to 6.11% between 2023 and 2024.

These measures reflect Burkina Faso’s determination to build a more resilient and equitable future, with food sovereignty at the heart of its development strategy. As security operations continue, the government maintains its dual focus on protecting citizens while transforming the agricultural sector to ensure long-term stability and prosperity.
