Burkina Faso/AES: A strategic energy alliance is being built around the Salkadamna coal complex

In a geopolitical context marked by the quest for strategic autonomy, Burkina Faso continues to strengthen its involvement in regional energy cooperation. On August 6, 2025, the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, received a delegation from the Republic of Niger, led by the Minister of Energy, Professor Haoua Amadou.

Carrying a message from General Abdourahamane TIANI, President of Niger, the minister came to propose expanded cooperation around the Salkadamna coal complex project.

This ambitious project aims to lay the foundations for shared energy sovereignty among the member states of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). By involving Burkina Faso in the initiative, Niger seeks to promote the pooling of resources and expertise to ensure sustainable energy independence—essential for industrial development, access to electricity for populations, and regional economic stability.

This approach fully aligns with the vision of the AES leaders, who are working together to build a sovereign, resilient, and forward-looking Africa. Through development-oriented diplomacy, the Presidents of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are translating their commitment into concrete actions that serve the well-being of their people, particularly through high-impact, value-adding infrastructure projects.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, true to his vision of a sovereign and united Burkina Faso, once again demonstrates his leadership in defending the strategic interests of the Sahel and his dedication to governance focused on citizens’ needs.
