Mali: General Assimi Goïta mobilizes more than 12 billion CFA francs to support vulnerable populations

Bamako – On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the President of the Transition, Army General Assimi Goïta, launched the 2025 edition of the National Response Plan to Food Insecurity. The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Mali Agricultural Products Office (OPAM) in Sogoniko, attended by institutional leaders, diplomats, technical and financial partners, including a representative from the World Food Programme (WFP).

This year, the Malian government has allocated over 12 billion CFA francs to implement this assistance program. The funding will provide 22,700 tons of cereals free of charge to the most vulnerable populations, while also carrying out complementary actions to strengthen food security.

As a symbolic gesture, the governors of Kita, Djigila, Nara, and the district of Bamako received official allocation documents from the Head of State. The event was also marked by the symbolic departure of food trucks bound for various regions. President Goïta later toured OPAM’s storage facilities.

In his speech, the Head of State outlined the three pillars of the plan:

  • Free distribution of more than 22,000 tons of cereals.
  • Subsidized sale of approximately 11,500 tons of rice.
  • Resilience-building through support to market gardeners, fish farmers, and land restoration initiatives.

General Assimi Goïta emphasized that this initiative is part of the Transition’s strategy for food sovereignty, aiming to ensure that every Malian has fair access to sufficient, quality food.

“We commend the resilience of our people and reaffirm our commitment to leave no Malian behind,” he stated.
