UN Counter-Terrorism Mission arrives in Togo to assess national security efforts
Togo is hosting a delegation from the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee this week, led by Nathalia Gherman. Scheduled to run until March 31, the visit assesses the country’s progress in counter-terrorism and national security strengthening. It is part of the fruitful cooperation between the Togolese government and the UN system on peace and stability.
The mission, opened on Monday, March 23, by Security Minister Calixte Madjoulba in the presence of several government members, examines national mechanisms. The aim is to identify persistent challenges and formulate recommendations to optimize current systems.
Topics covered include criminal justice, terrorist financing, border security, prevention of violent extremism, the use of security technologies, as well as the promotion of human rights and gender equality.
“This visit is a valuable opportunity to share our experiences and identify ongoing challenges,” Minister Madjoulba stated, emphasizing the importance of the exchange.
In recent years, Togo has intensified efforts to strengthen its security. Legislative reforms have been adopted, enhancing the legal framework against terrorism. The operational capacities of defense and security forces have been boosted through training and modern equipment.
Regional cooperation initiatives are improving surveillance of porous borders, while measures target the covert financing of extremist groups.
This UN mission comes at a critical time amid heightened tensions in the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea regions. It will help refine Togolese strategies by integrating technological innovations such as artificial intelligence for early detection while ensuring respect for human rights.
An assessment report with concrete recommendations for enhanced resilience is expected following the mission.
The Togolese government reaffirms its commitment to transforming threats into opportunities for lasting stability. This evaluation will not only strengthen Togo but also serve as an inspiration for the sub-region in facing the terrorist threat.
