Burkina Faso: Economic performance praised at the 11th annual review of the UEMOA

Burkina Faso is making significant strides in implementing economic and institutional reforms within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). This positive momentum was highlighted during the institution’s 11th annual review for 2026, held on Tuesday, May 5, in Ouagadougou.

The meeting was co-chaired by  the Minister of Economy of Burkina Faso, Dr. Aboubakar Nacanabo, who also serves as President of the UEMOA Council of Ministers, and the President of the UEMOA Commission, Abdoulaye Drop.

The high-level gathering brought together several members of Burkina Faso’s government and regional organization officials, in a context of strong expectations for deeper economic integration.

Its goal was to assess ongoing reforms, evaluate performance, and consider future directions for more effective public policies.

Central to the discussions was the evaluation of community reforms implemented by Burkina Faso.

According to Abdoulaye Diop, the country achieved an 89% implementation rate in 2025, reflecting a clear consolidation of its performance.

This progress is all the more notable given that the number of reforms assessed rose from 132 in 2024 to 145 in 2025, demonstrating the national authorities’ increased commitment to the economic transformation process.

The President of the UEMOA Commission praised the quality of collaboration between Burkinabe teams and the institution’s staff.

He highlighted a constructive working environment marked by rigor, professionalism, and a spirit of fraternity.

This close cooperation enabled in-depth technical sessions ahead of the official meeting, ensuring an objective and comprehensive evaluation of progress made.

Beyond the numbers, this annual review serves as a true strategic management tool.

It provides Burkinabe authorities with a solid foundation to adjust public policies, enhance reform effectiveness, and accelerate the country’s economic development.

By consolidating its achievements and maintaining an ambitious course, Burkina Faso confirms its active role in UEMOA’s regional integration drive.

This performance underscores the authorities’ determination to make economic governance a key lever for sustainable and inclusive growth.
