Mali and Mauritania strengthen cooperation on migration, security, and border management

The issues of migration, the repatriation of undocumented migrants from Mauritania, and the management of security challenges along their shared border are among the key concerns for both Mali and Mauritania. Finding lasting solutions to these challenges is essential to ensuring peaceful coexistence between Malians and Mauritanians—a priority for the authorities of both nations.

In a move highlighting strengthened bilateral ties, a high-level Malian government delegation visited Nouakchott on Thursday, March 27, 2025, for crucial discussions with Mauritanian officials.

Led by Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, the delegation engaged in productive talks aimed at reinforcing historical bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The discussions focused on several critical areas:

  • Enhancing bilateral relations between Mali and Mauritania
  • Managing the repatriation of certain Malian nationals from border areas
  • Improving coordination in the fight against irregular migration

Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration and working together to address these pressing issues.

The significance of the meeting was further underscored when the delegations were received by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, signalling the importance of unity between these neighboring  African nations in tackling shared challenges.

This meeting reflects a mutual desire to foster stability, security, and stronger regional partnerships—an approach that could serve as a model for cross-border cooperation in the Sahel.
