Togo strengthens Public-Private dialogue ahead of budget formulation

In a move to enhance economic collaboration, Togo’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Essowè Georges Barcola, has emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering constructive fiscal discussions between public institutions and private sector stakeholders. The announcement came during the inaugural technical committee meeting between state and private sector representatives held March 28 in Lomé, attended by Commerce Minister Rose Kayi Mivedor-Sambiani.

The high-level dialogue platform addressed critical economic matters including:

  • Progress on ongoing fiscal negotiations
  • Implementation status of measures agreed since September 2023
  • Concrete steps to address private sector concerns

Barcola reiterated President Faure Gnassingbé’s vision of private sector-led economic revival, stating: “We’re committed to achieving more by leveraging private enterprise as the engine for growth in key sectors.”

Notable advancements include renewed fiscal dialogue, enhanced appeal mechanisms, and establishment of regional consultation committees.

Upcoming initiatives include:
✓ April 10 stakeholder forum uniting government, businesses and labor unions
✓ New radio program dedicated to SME concerns
✓ Pre-budget consultations to align fiscal policies with business realities

The government looks to the private sector as the cornerstone of sustainable growth,” Barcola stressed, highlighting the need for administrative reforms to better serve business needs.

This approach positions responsive governance as central to Togo’s economic strategy, aiming to prevent policy bottlenecks while fostering an investor-friendly climate.

The meeting marks a strategic shift toward inclusive economic planning, with the government demonstrating willingness to adapt fiscal frameworks in consultation with business leaders ahead of crucial budget decisions.
