Burkina Faso: Unwavering commitment of fighting forces in the decisive fight against terrorism

March 2025 marked a turning point in Burkina Faso’s fight against terrorism as national forces executed a series of decisive operations across the country. Under President Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership, security forces demonstrated unprecedented coordination between ground troops and precision airstrikes, dealing significant blows to insurgent networks.

The month saw tactical victories unfold nationwide:

  • March 16: A surgical airstrike in Thiou eliminated a motorcycle terror cell attempting infiltration
  • March 18: Foiled attacks in Centre-Est and Zorkoum left insurgents retreating with heavy losses
  • March 24: A high-value capture in Manni yielded critical intelligence
  • March 30-31: Coordinated strikes in Sourou Valley and Kabonga disrupted command structures

Specialized units like the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) and Volunteers for Homeland Defense (VDP) proved instrumental in ambush operations and intercepting enemy supply routes.

The April 1 elimination of Khalidou – a prominent terrorist leader in Arly Park – while fleeing in his luxury vehicle underscored the military’s improved targeting capabilities.

These operations reflect a strategic shift toward proactive, intelligence-driven warfare. From dismantling terror meetings in abandoned markets to intercepting fleeing convoys near Kompienga, each success has degraded insurgents’ operational capacity.

While challenges remain, Burkina Faso’s forces are demonstrating they can not only defend territory but actively dismantle terror networks piece by piece.
