Burkina Faso launches strategic Dam project to boost agricultural sovereignty

Burkina Faso’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Ismaël Sombié, visited Diarradougou in Bama commune today to officially launch construction of the Diarradougou Dam, a key infrastructure project in President Ibrahim Traoré’s agricultural transformation agenda.

The 10 million cubic meter dam, fully funded by the Burkinabe government with a 6 billion CFA franc investment, will feature:

  • A 1 km embankment
  • A spillway structure
  • Water intake for the Bama irrigation canal
  • Drainage systems

Scheduled for completion within 7 months (before the next rainy season), the project will irrigate 1,260 hectares of farmland upstream of Bama, significantly boosting local agricultural capacity.

“This dam embodies President Traoré’s vision for food sovereignty and self-reliant development,” Minister Sombié stated during the inspection. “Unlike past projects dependent on foreign partners, this is 100% Burkinabe-funded and Burkinabe-executed.”

The Diarradougou Dam represents Burkina Faso’s strategic shift under Captain Traoré’s leadership toward infrastructure-driven rural development.

It follows multiple similar projects nationwide aimed at creating resilient agricultural systems and reducing food imports.

With its dual purpose of water management and economic empowerment, the dam stands as a physical manifestation of Traoré’s “Burkina Debout” (Burkina Standing) policy – a commitment to national ownership of resources and development pathways.
