Diplomatic talks between the United States and General Abdourahamane Tiani’s Government in Niger
In Niger over the past weekend, the United States Ambassador to Niger, Ms. Kathleen FitzGibbon, held a diplomatic meeting with the Head of Government, Lamine Zeine, at the Primature in Niamey, according to official sources.
This routine diplomatic encounter took place without a press statement following the audience, as reported by the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP).
Ms. FitzGibbon, who has been in Niger for a few weeks since the ousting of President Bazoum, presented the certified copy of her credentials to the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, on December 2nd.
Against the backdrop of General Abdourahamane Tiani assuming power in July 2023, the United States continues to extend humanitarian support to the Nigerien people.
Additionally, they have decided to maintain their military presence to counter terrorism, setting them apart from France, which has practically severed ties with Niger.
With the new government, France can no longer exert the same influence over the governance of the country, a significant shift in its African interests.
This diplomatic meeting holds particular significance in the current political landscape, emphasizing the importance of reliable international exchanges for Niger in this new era under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani.
