Togo/MIATO: Burkina Faso as guest of honor

Burkina Faso took center stage as guest of honor at Togo’s 4th International Crafts Market (MIATO), showcasing its rich artisanal heritage to global audiences. The event became a vibrant celebration of Burkinabe culture, featuring live demonstrations of traditional weaving, bronze-casting, and leatherwork alongside performances by folk musicians.

This recognition validates our work preserving ancestral techniques,” shared Ouagadougou weaver Aminata Sawadogo, echoing the pride of participating artisans who secured valuable international orders.

Beyond commerce, the exhibition highlighted culture’s power to unite West Africa, with organizers praising Burkina’s craftsmanship as a bridge between nations.

With handicrafts employing over 60% of Burkina’s rural workforce, MIATO provided crucial economic opportunities.

Visitors marvelled at intricate textiles and woodcarvings while sampling iconic dishes like poulet bicyclette.

The successful showcase positions Burkina’s artisans for greater global visibility, proving traditional creativity remains both culturally vital and economically relevant in today’s world.

As the fair concluded, Burkina’s craftsmen returned home with new connections and renewed confidence in their cultural legacy – a testament to art’s enduring power to transcend borders and challenges.

The event marked another step in Burkina Faso’s growing reputation as a guardian of Africa’s living artistic traditions
