Football/ Egypt edges South Africa in tight U20 AFCON opener

The 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations kicked off in Egypt on Sunday with a narrow 1-0 victory for the hosts against South Africa at Cairo International Stadium.

Mohamed Abdallah’s 62nd-minute strike proved decisive in a tightly contested Group A opener.

Earlier at Suez Canal Stadium, Zambia and Sierra Leone played out a goalless draw in the tournament’s inaugural match. The result leaves all four teams in the competitive five-team group chasing their first win.

Action resumes Wednesday with South Africa facing Tanzania (15:00 GMT) at Suez Canal Stadium, while Egypt looks to build momentum against Sierra Leone at the same venue (18:00 GMT).

The Pharaohs will seek to capitalize on their winning start as the tournament enters its crucial early phase.
