Togo / Togolese education on the move: Focus on excellence and equity

As part of the strategic vision led by Council President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, the Togolese government is actively pursuing the transformation of the national education system. Grounded in principles of equity, quality, and accessibility, this ongoing reform recently took a significant step forward with the launch of a major data collection operation in schools, aligned with the PASEC 2024 program.

Since May 5, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has been conducting a rigorous assessment campaign across all seven educational regions of the country, targeting a representative sample of schools. This initiative is part of the CONFEMEN Programme for the Analysis of Education Systems (PASEC) and aims to evaluate students’ proficiency in fundamental skills such as reading and mathematics.

Beyond academic performance, the survey also gathers valuable data on teaching practices, learning environments, and classroom conditions. The goal is to equip Togo with robust, internationally comparable analytical tools to effectively guide public education policies.

This rigorous approach reflects the authorities’ commitment to building a more efficient, resilient, and inclusive education system. By addressing educational disparities and strengthening monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, the government is working to ensure that every child—regardless of background—has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Since 2020, investments in the education sector have seen a marked increase, with the allocated budget rising by over 50%. This financial boost underscores the Head of State’s strong commitment to making education a central pillar of Togo’s sustainable development.
