Ghana / Security and Governance: President Mahama installs a new team to strengthen the rule of law in the country

In Accra, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama presided over a highly symbolic ceremony marking the swearing-in of Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the new Inspector General of Police, as well as the newly appointed members of the Police Council. This solemn event is part of an ambitious security sector reform aimed at modernizing institutions and strengthening trust between law enforcement and citizens.

In his speech, President Mahama highlighted the strategic importance of this new team. “I had the honor of administering the oath of office to Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the new Inspector General of Police, and the other members of the Police Council,” he stated. He emphasized the sensitive and fundamental nature of the responsibilities entrusted to these individuals, who are expected to ensure security, peace, and respect for the rule of law in the country.

“The work of the Police Council is essential to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of citizens. It requires total commitment, impeccable integrity, and a deep understanding of the realities on the ground”, he reminded, underlining the high expectations placed on this new structure.

President Mahama expressed his confidence in the newly appointed officials, encouraging them to work together towards building a modern, efficient, professional police service focused on upholding human rights. He also praised the commitment of the authorities to the ongoing security reforms, which are essential in the face of growing challenges in the West African subregion.

The swearing-in ceremony reflects the government’s determination to strengthen the rule of law in Ghana, in a regional context marked by persistent security threats. This institutional renewal stands as a strong signal in favor of stability, justice, and national cohesion.
