Burkina Faso: First successful kidney transplant, a decisive turning point for national medicine hailed by President Ibrahim Traoré

Burkina Faso has reached a historic milestone in the medical field with the successful completion of its very first kidney transplant at the Tengandogo University Hospital Center in Ouagadougou. This remarkable achievement has been praised at the highest level of the state. On Friday, the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, personally welcomed the medical team responsible for the operation at the Koulouba Palace.

The delegation, led by the Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Lucien Jean Claude KARGOUGOU, included both Burkinabè specialists and their Turkish counterparts. During the official audience, the Head of State congratulated the entire team, commending their scientific rigor, unwavering dedication, and strong sense of duty. He emphasized that this operation marks a major step forward for Burkina Faso’s healthcare system, particularly in the area of specialized care and health sovereignty.

For Professor Gérard COULIBALY, national coordinator of the transplant program, this successful surgical intervention is more than just a medical procedure—it represents a fundamental turning point in the delivery of high-level care in Burkina Faso. “It’s a giant leap for our country. We have proven that we have the skills to carry out complex operations like this right here at home,” he proudly stated.

Dr. Eyüp KAHVECI, president of the Turkish Organ Transplant Foundation, expressed his delight at the success of this fruitful medical collaboration. He affirmed that Turkish healthcare professionals will continue to share their expertise to strengthen Burkina Faso’s organ transplant program on a long-term basis.

Beyond the technical feat, this first transplant is a symbol of hope for hundreds of patients suffering from kidney failure. It also paves the way for other types of transplants, ushering in a new era for medicine in Burkina Faso.
