Burkina Faso/Cooperation: As Russia reopens Embassy in Burkina Faso, Burkinabe Learn About Novovoronezh nuclear power plant

The Russian Federation now has an embassy in Burkina Faso. The announcement was reaffirmed on Tuesday 26 December, following those that made at the second Russia-Africa Summit in July 2023, and on Thursday, the doors of this new Russian representation in Ouagadougou were officially reopened.

After the closure of the Russian Embassy in Burkina Faso in 1992 and that of Burkina Faso in Moscow in 1996, the Russian Embassy was reopened in Burkina Faso on Thursday 28 December 2023, marking a new beginning and a new dynamic in relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Burkina Faso is in Moscow to study the facilities at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant, which has 60 years’ experience in operating pressurised water reactors (PWRs).

According to reports, the guests from Burkina Faso learned about training methods for specialists from countries where the Russian state-owned nuclear group Rosatom is building power plants.

The members of the Burkina Faso government delegation had time to see a generation 3+ unit at the VVER-1200 nuclear reactors, and also visited sports facilities and social sites in Novovoronezh.

As a reminder, the transitional authorities in Burkina Faso are also planning to build a nuclear power station in the country, under a presidential project supported by Russia.

This demonstrates the good relations of friendship and cooperation that now bind Burkina Faso and Russia.
