Culture/ Samba meets spirituality: Rio celebrates National Samba Day at Christ the Redeemer

Rio de Janeiro celebrated National Samba Day with a unique fusion of rhythm and faith. The iconic Corcovado train transformed into a moving celebration, the “Samba Train,” hosting a special thanksgiving mass filled with music.

As the train journeyed, renowned samba artists performed, blending enchanting beats with prayer. Father Omar Raposo, rector of the sanctuary, highlighted the deep connection: “In samba culture, we find values, love, respect; that is where God manifests.”

The celebration culminated at the summit beneath the Christ the Redeemer statue, joined by representatives from Rio’s most traditional samba schools.

Selminha Sorriso, flag-bearer for Beija-Flor, expressed the moment’s profound meaning: “Celebrating here is a immense joy for us and for our ancestors, who resisted so we could be here today.”

The event also marked the 30th anniversary of the Samba Train, which connects Central do Brasil station to Oswaldo Cruz a historic cradle of modern samba—honoring the rich, enduring legacy of this musical heritage.
