U.S. Stars embraced by Guinea in heritage homecoming

Movie stars Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors arrived in Guinea Friday for a ceremony granting them citizenship, having traced their ancestry to the nation via DNA tests. The private cultural event, organized by the ministry, aligns with regional efforts to encourage diaspora investment and heritage reclamation.

Their visit comes after a turbulent period for Majors, who was sentenced to probation and a domestic violence program in the U.S. last year. The couple was welcomed with fanfare in Conakry.

Guinea has a history of welcoming diaspora figures, most notably singer Miriam Makeba and activist Stokely Carmichael in the 1960s. The current initiative echoes Ghana’s “Year of Return.”

The nation, recently returned to civilian rule after a 2021 coup, maintains Western ties. Despite vast mineral wealth, including bauxite and gold, its population remains among West Africa’s poorest.

The ceremony symbolizes both personal homecoming and Guinea’s ongoing outreach to its global family.
