Cape Verde: José Maria Neves seeks a second presidential term

Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves has announced his bid for another five-year term. He made the announcement on Monday, ahead of the presidential election scheduled for November 15.

First, the 66-year-old president said he wants to continue his work and contribute building a stronger and more prosperous nation. He is also seeking the backing of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), which he once led during his political career.

Meanwhile, Neves is expected to face a competitive race. At least nine other potential candidates have already expressed their intention to run in the election.

However, the incumbent president can rely on extensive political experience. He became head of the West African archipelago after winning the 2021 presidential election. Before reaching the presidency, Neves served as prime minister from 2001 to 2016.

Nevertheless, his record in office is likely to be a central issue during the campaign. Cape Verde continues to face several social and economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment.

Finally, the election will take place in a country of around 520,000 people. Cape Verde is an Atlantic archipelago located off the coast of West Africa.
