Niger: In the face of tonight’s events, calm and confidence in the institutions must prevail

The Nigerien capital experienced a troubled night this Wednesday, January 28, marked by loud explosions and exchanges of gunfire in the southern area near the Diori Hamani International Airport. Although calm returned by morning, the event sparked intense concern among the population, fueled by a wave of speculation on social media.

The incident, which remains under investigation, occurred around midnight. According to preliminary information from security sources, the targeted area; which houses strategic military and airport infrastructure; was struck by mortar fire.

The armed forces of Niger and  (FAN) responded immediately, quickly securing the perimeter and bringing the situation under control within hours. “The situation is under control,” confirmed the same sources, praising the “swift reaction” of the deployed units. Sweeping operations continued at daybreak to ensure the complete security of the area.

In this context of uncertainty, it is essential for the population to remain calm and patient. No full official statement has yet been released by the competent authorities, who are conducting standard verifications to establish the facts with precision.

It is therefore crucial to dismiss unverified rumors circulating, often amplified on social media, which only heighten collective anxiety.

In such circumstances, the only reliable source of information remains the official version, which will be communicated in due time by legitimate authorities.

This vigilance takes place within a complex regional security context. For several days, state services had already been on heightened alert due to persistent threats in the region, particularly emanating from the three-border zone.

The spontaneous mobilization of certain patriotic brigades for “civil defense” reflects citizen engagement but must be coordinated with operations led exclusively by regular forces, which alone are authorized to ensure security within the framework of the law.

The priority message at this time is a call for trust and composure. The institutions of the Republic, particularly the FAN , are at work.

They have demonstrated their responsiveness and professionalism in securing the capital.

The public is encouraged to go about their activities while staying attentive to official communication channels.

Prudence, civic responsibility, and unity behind our security forces are our strongest defenses against disinformation and fear.

The nation will face this, as always, with dignity and discipline, while awaiting the clarifying statement from the authorities.
