Burkina Faso: Launch of a national program to clean up 100 water infrastructure facilities

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources has unveiled a strategic nationwide plan to rehabilitate hydraulic infrastructure. One hundred dams and water reservoirs have been selected to undergo desilting operations aimed at restoring their original storage capacity.

This large-scale program covers several regions key to the agro-pastoral economy of Burkina Faso.

In the West and Boucle du Mouhoun regions, work will focus on the Karouka, Tia, Tchériiba, and Sao dams in Mouhoun province, as well as several sites in the Balé and Tuy provinces.

The initiative addresses a crucial imperative: ensuring water availability for agricultural, pastoral, and fisheries activities, on which millions of Burkinabe depend.

By restoring the water retention capacity of silted-up dams, the government is securing a vital resource in the face of climate variability.

This extensive operation is part of the  climate resilience of the country and food sovereignty policy.

It will significantly increase water reserves for irrigation, livestock watering, and the development of fish farming.

The rehabilitation of this hydraulic infrastructure represents a strategic investment in the rural economy.

It will help stabilize agricultural production, reduce the vulnerability of herders during the dry season, and create economic opportunities around the restored reservoirs.
