Niger: Niger and Libya strengthen their cooperation in the energy sector

A team of Libyan electrical engineers arrived in Niamey on Thursday as part of efforts to strengthen Niger’s energy capabilities.

The delegation was welcomed by Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Energy, Mahaman Moustapha Barké Bako, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, Bakary Yaou Sangar.

Discussions took place at the airport’s VIP lounge before the group proceeded to Niamey’s Bravia Hotel.

There, a meeting was organized between the Libyan engineers and officials from the Nigerien electricity company, Nigelec.

Despite possessing significant uranium and oil reserves, Niger currently imports electricity from Nigeria, relying on its neighbor for 70% of its energy needs.

Following the military coup in Niger on July 26, 2023, Nigeria, in accordance with sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), cut off the electricity supply to its northern neighbor.

In response to this situation, Niger has been taking internal initiatives to meet its electricity needs since Abdourahamane Tiani assumed power.

With the expertise of Libyan electrical engineers, Niger is making positive strides towards electricity production, a development that could contribute to the revitalization of its economy.
