Osimhen’s Nigeria stumbles to Equatorial Guinea in AFCON 2023 opener
Nigeria, led by their African Ballon d’Or winner Victor Osimhen, made their debut in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday against Equatorial Guinea. Despite being the favorites, the Super Eagles were caught off guard, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Equatorial Guinea took the lead with a superb goal from Ibán Salvador in the 37th minute, but Nigeria quickly responded with Osimhen heading in a goal from Ademola Lookman’s cross in the 39th minute, resulting in a balanced score at halftime.
In the second half, Nigeria dominated the game, putting significant pressure on Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
Despite numerous attempts, including shots from Zaidu, Osimhen, and Aina, Nigeria couldn’t break the deadlock.
Osimhen had a crucial opportunity to secure the win but missed the target. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving Nigeria with a disappointing start to the competition.
Ivory Coast, with three points from their previous victory, leads Group A, leaving Nigeria under pressure ahead of their next match against Ivory Coast.
Equatorial Guinea positions themselves well in the group, while Guinea-Bissau occupies the fourth position in Group A.
