For several months now, Burkina Faso has been the target of a new kind of information war. Having failed to break the resolve of the Burkinabè people through terrorism, certain circles hostile to the country’s path toward sovereignty appear to have shifted their battle to the digital realm. Fake videos, synthetic voices, and AI-generated montages: The tools of manipulation are becoming more sophisticated, but the goal remains the same: to undermine national cohesion and cast doubt on the transitional authorities.
This is not an isolated incident. The Burkinabé government has already publicly denounced, on several occasions, the circulation of doctored videos accusing the defense and security forces of abuses, before investigations revealed that the videos were fabricated.
More recently, AI-generated content has circulated widely on social media, depicting fake arrests or events involving the authorities in Burkina Faso; some of these fabrications were initially presented as “works of fiction” before being misappropriated and disseminated as real events by complicit sources.
This situation should serve as a wake-up call for every citizen. The recent plot foiled in January 2026 involving civilians, military personnel, and police officers serves as a reminder that those seeking to destabilize the country will stop at nothing, including fabricating digital evidence designed to create the impression that control over the territory has been lost, in the hope of inciting the population to rise up against Captain Ibrahim Traoré and the Progressive People’s Revolution.
In the face of this war of images and sound, civic vigilance is a duty. It is up to every Burkinabe to verify information before sharing it, to be wary of videos with unclear origins, and to trust official channels rather than unsourced viral content. Local fact-checking platforms play a vital role in debunking these campaigns.
Through unity and clear-headedness, the people of Burkina Faso have already thwarted several attempts at destabilization. Once again, they will refuse to be manipulated by fabricated images, regardless of their source.
