DRC: Issues and reflections on the country’s membership of “La Francophonie”

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is observing International Francophonie Day with a unique approach this year. Instead of the usual festivities, the day is marked by a critical reflection on the country’s membership in the Francophone community.

The General Delegate for Francophonie of the DRC, Mr. MABIALA Ma-Umba, emphasized that this day is an opportunity to «take a critical look at the DRC’s membership in the Francophone community».

 He encouraged a thorough examination of the country’s contribution to Francophone institutions and the use of this membership as a tool for serving national strategic interests.

To commemorate this event, the General Delegation for Francophonie and the RTNC have launched special television programs under the theme «The Francophonie We Want».

Airing on March 18, 19, and 20, these programs will include a special message from the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Francophonie, H.E. Christophe LUTUNDULA APALA Pen’APALA, on March 20.

As a full-fledged member of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), which comprises 88 member states and governments, the DRC seeks to evaluate its role within this linguistic and cultural community.

Mr. MABIALA highlights the role of the OIF as a platform for political consultation, dialogue, and cooperation for the development of its members.

Despite the absence of official events, civil society is encouraged to continue with planned activities for Francophonie Week, underscoring the importance of solidarity and cooperation within the global Francophone community.

This special day in the DRC underscores the challenges and reflections regarding the country’s membership in the Francophonie, demonstrating its desire to strategically engage while evaluating its impact and contribution to this international community.
