Football/Lionel Messi sets new record in Copa America history

Lionel Messi has set a new record for the most appearances in Copa América history, reaching 35 matches.

The Argentine legend achieved this milestone by playing in the opening game of the 48th edition against Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Messi, who debuted in the Copa América in 2007, previously tied with Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone’s record of 34 appearances during the last tournament’s final.

Livingstone played between 1941 and 1953 and passed away in 2012. Now, Messi stands alone with the record.

On July 10, 2021, Messi clinched his first Copa América title with Argentina, securing a 1-0 victory over Brazil at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with Ángel Di María scoring the winning goal.

Over his seven Copa América campaigns, Messi has accumulated 21 wins, 10 draws, and only three defeats.

He has scored 13 goals, ranking seventh in the all-time scoring list, and provided 17 assists, the most in the tournament’s history.
