Botswana celebrates historic homecoming for Olympic Gold medalist Letsile Tebogo

Botswana witnessed a historic celebration as tens of thousands of fans filled the National Stadium in Gaborone to welcome home sprinter Letsile Tebogo, the nation’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist.

The 21-year-old athlete made history on August 8 in Paris, becoming the first African to win the men’s 200m with a record-breaking time of 19.46 seconds.

Tebogo’s victory, alongside a silver medal in the men’s 4x400m relay, marked a significant achievement for Botswana, bringing their total Olympic medal count to four.

The homecoming was a national event, with President Mokgweetsi Masisi declaring a half-day holiday to honor Tebogo’s success.

The Olympic team’s arrival was met with jubilation at Gaborone’s airport, where traditional dancers and an exuberant crowd welcomed the athletes.

The celebrations continued with a grand parade at the National Stadium, where Tebogo and his teammates were cheered on by thousands of flag-waving supporters.

Tebogo dedicated his gold medal to his late mother, Seratiwa, expressing that he carries her memory with him in every race.

The young sprinter’s triumph has not only made history but has also united the nation in pride and celebration.
