Telegram apologizes to South Korea amid deepfake pornography scandal

Telegram has issued an apology to South Korean authorities after being implicated in the spread of deepfake pornography on its platform, a situation that has sparked outrage in the country.

The messaging app, under investigation by South Korean police, was accused of facilitating the distribution of AI-generated explicit images, often created and shared by teenagers.

In response, Telegram removed the offending content and expressed regret, labeling the incident as “unfortunate” and apologizing for any “misunderstanding.”

The company also proposed a dedicated communication channel with South Korea’s Communications Standards Commission, which praised Telegram’s proactive approach.

This scandal is the latest in a series of controversies involving Telegram in South Korea, where the app has previously been used in criminal activities.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of regulating digital platforms and protecting individuals from exploitation in the online space.
