Burkina Faso: It’s done, the motto “Homeland or death, we shall overcome” has been adopted

In a powerful symbolic move, Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly unanimously voted on Tuesday to restore the historic motto from the era of Thomas Sankara: “La Patrie ou la mort, nous vaincrons” (“The Fatherland or Death, We Shall Overcome”).

This iconic slogan, which defined the revolutionary period from 1983 to 1987, replaces the former motto, “Unité – Progrès – Justice” (“Unity – Progress – Justice”), and signals a renewed sense of resilience and determination for the Burkinabe people.

All 71 deputies present approved this adoption, highlighting a shift back to the sankarist ideals of patriotism, resilience, and unshakable faith in Burkina Faso’s future.

Amid today’s social and security challenges, this return to the historic motto goes beyond a simple nod to the past; it represents a profound reaffirmation of national sovereignty and a commitment to overcoming current adversities.

Following the Assembly’s vote, the text will now be forwarded to the Constitutional Council for legal validation before official promulgation by Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

President Traoré, whose vision aligns with the legacy of the late Thomas Sankara, has prioritized civic engagement and national defense.

This revival of an emblematic motto resonates with the collective hopes of Burkinabe citizens, rallying them under the spirit of Sankara towards a future of dignity and strength in the face of ongoing challenges.
