Champions League: Manchester City’s crisis deepens with stunning Champions League defeat in Lisbon

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City hit a new low on Tuesday night, suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Sporting CP in Lisbon. The Premier League champions were torn apart by Swedish sensation Viktor Gyökeres, who netted a magnificent hat-trick in what became City’s third consecutive loss across all competitions.

In what should have been a routine Champions League fixture for the European champions, City instead looked vulnerable and disorganized.

The defeat marks their worst run since 2018, following recent setbacks against Tottenham in the League Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League.

The star of the show, Gyökeres, continued his remarkable form, bringing his season tally to an impressive 23 goals in just 17 appearances.

His performance will undoubtedly attract attention from Europe’s elite clubs in the upcoming transfer window.

The match also served as an emotional farewell for Sporting’s manager Ruben Amorim at the José Alvalade Stadium.

Before his anticipated move to Manchester United, Amorim downplayed the victory’s significance regarding his future challenges in England, stating, “United cannot play this defensively… it will be a completely different world.”

A visibly frustrated Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but remained defiant: “It’s hard to swallow, but I’m more determined than ever to get the team back to its level.”

The result leaves City in an unexpected position of vulnerability, while Sporting climbs to second place in their Champions’ League group.
