Culture/ Pharrell Williams’ life story unfolds in Lego with unique new documentary “Piece By Piece”

The new documentary Piece By Piece, directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville, brings Pharrell Williams’ life to the screen in an unusual way—entirely animated with Lego.

The film, which explores Williams’ career and artistic journey, uses Lego animation to capture imaginative scenes, from his childhood musical awakening to his synaesthesia-influenced creative process.

Neville, known for 20 Feet from Stardom, shared that Piece By Piece was born from a creative pitch by Pharrell, who suggested making a Lego-based documentary as a fresh storytelling approach.

The director embraced the concept, using animation to dive into Williams’ mind and visualize his beats as colorful, unique Lego sculptures that reflect how Pharrell perceives his music.

Though the documentary briefly references Pharrell’s co-writing of Blurred Lines, it omits the controversial 2015 copyright trial. “It felt like it belonged in a different movie,” Neville said, noting that Piece By Piece aims to show Pharrell’s creative highs without focusing on legal disputes.

Lego, though hesitant, backed the project, acknowledging it as a platform to discuss broader social issues like race, which are part of Pharrell’s story.

With appearances by music icons like Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, and Snoop Dogg, Piece By Piece is a vivid portrayal of Pharrell’s life and work, creatively reimagined in Lego form.
