Football/ Premier League: Arsenal outclass Manchester United to close the gap at the top

Arsenal capitalized on Liverpool’s slip-up with a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United, ending Ruben Amorim’s unbeaten start as United manager. Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba, both from corners, underscored Arsenal’s growing reputation as set-piece specialists under Mikel Arteta.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Declan Rice’s precise corner was met by Timber, whose header at the near post left United’s defense flat-footed.

Arsenal nearly doubled their lead shortly after, with Manuel Ugarte forced to clear a flicked effort off the line from another Rice delivery.

The second goal sealed United’s fate in unconventional fashion. Thomas Partey’s header from a Bukayo Saka corner deflected off Saliba’s back and into the net, leaving Andre Onana with no chance.

The Gunners have now scored a league-leading 22 goals from corners since last season, a testament to their tactical evolution under Arteta.

While United had moments of promise, including Diogo Dalot’s near-miss in the first half and a sharp save from David Raya to deny Matthijs de Ligt, they struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity.

Substitute Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz added to Arsenal’s late chances, but the hosts maintained control throughout.

The win lifts Arsenal to 28 points, level with Chelsea and seven behind leaders Liverpool. For Amorim, who had warned of looming challenges, the loss serves as a stark reminder of the work ahead to restore United’s consistency.
