Football/ Eric Chelle appointed Nigeria’s Head Coach amid mixed reactions

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, marking a significant shift in leadership. Chelle, a former Mali international and ex-coach of Mali’s national team, takes the reins with the challenging task of reviving Nigeria’s struggling World Cup qualifying campaign.

Chelle replaces Augustine Eguavoen, who had served as interim coach, leading Nigeria to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The 47-year-old brings a notable record, including Mali’s historic victory over Nigeria in a friendly last year, their first in 50 years.

However, Chelle’s appointment has sparked debate. Fans had anticipated a high-profile coach, particularly after the NFF’s failed attempts to secure names like Herve Renard and Bruno Labbadia.

The decision to appoint Chelle, the first non-Nigerian African coach for the Super Eagles, follows dissatisfaction with previous performances under Finidi George.

Nigeria, three-time continental champions, currently trail Group C leaders Rwanda by four points in World Cup qualifiers.

With only the group winner earning a spot in the 2026 finals, Chelle faces immediate pressure to deliver results, starting with a critical match in Kigali in March.

The NFF has yet to reveal the duration of Chelle’s contract, but his ability to unite fans and players will be key to Nigeria’s success.
