Copa del Rey: Real Madrid edges past Celta Vigo in a thrilling encounter

Real Madrid secured their place in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals after a dramatic 5-2 victory over Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite initial struggles, the Merengues rallied in extra time to avoid an upset and deliver an emphatic finish.

The match started with Celta Vigo posing an early threat, including a close call when Carl Starfelt hit the post. The visitors, despite missing star forward Iago Aspas, pressed aggressively.

Real Madrid struggled to find their rhythm, with predictable offensive plays and a quiet start from Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr.

Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a stunning solo effort, restoring confidence among the Madrid faithful.

Early in the second half, Vinícius Jr doubled the lead after a brilliant team play involving Brahim Díaz and Mbappé.

Celta refused to back down. Jonathan Bamba capitalized on a defensive error by Eduardo Camavinga to score in the 83rd minute, and Marcos Alonso converted a penalty to level the game in injury time, forcing extra time.

In the additional period, Brazilian prodigy Endrick emerged as the hero, scoring twice, including a spectacular solo goal. Federico Valverde added to the tally with a long-range strike to seal the victory.

Real Madrid’s resilience ensured their progression, with the quarterfinal draw set for Monday. The night, however, reminded the Merengues of the fine margins between success and disaster.
