Burkina Faso is continuing the reorganisation of its military apparatus with the effective establishment of the Rapid Intervention Groups (GIR). After the creation of the Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR), the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, signed a decree on 23 September 2026 appointing new commanders to lead these units.
The GIR are placed under the authority of the Special and Rapid Intervention Brigade (BSIR). Their main mission is to strengthen the operational capabilities of the armed forces against terrorism and organized crime, two major threats affecting several regions of the country.
The arrangement aims to give the Burkinabe army more mobile and more responsive units. The objective is to enable rapid intervention in theaters of operation, so as to better respond to emergency situations and limit the advance of armed groups.
The appointment of new chiefs at the head of the GIR is part of a broader effort to restructure the defense forces. It reflects the authorities’ desire to adapt military organization to conditions on the ground and improve the effectiveness of the security response.
With the operationalization of these groups, Burkina Faso intends to consolidate its system for combating insecurity. This development should strengthen coordination between the different combat units and improve the armed forces’ ability to protect populations and the national territory
