Burkina Faso: Captain Ibrahim TRAORE announces crucial measures for the reconquest of the territory: Levies, recruitments and remissions of sentences

The Transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, presides over the Council of Ministers on January 5, 2023, announcing crucial measures for the reconquest of the territory. The government renews the 5% deduction on ministerial salaries in favor of the Patriotic Support Fund, while the President forgoes his salary.

A new decision imposes a 1% deduction on the net salaries of all workers, with an additional 25% on bonuses in various sectors to contribute to the Fund.

These measures, applicable in 2024, aim to strengthen the equipment of the combat forces and increase the allowances for Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland.

As part of the territorial reconquest, the Ministry of Public Service, Labor, and Social Protection is authorized to recruit personnel, especially in the fields of security, agriculture, and health.

The Council also adopts a decree from the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, granting sentence reductions as of January 1, 2024.

This reduction applies to 968 convicted inmates, with 335 benefiting from a complete reduction, 626 from a partial reduction, and 7 life-sentenced individuals receiving a commutation of sentences.

Selection criteria include age, health condition, and exemplary behavior of the inmates.
