Narrow Escape: Gambian National Football Team’s Harrowing Flight Incident Ahead of AFCON 2023

The Gambian national football team faced a potentially disastrous situation en route to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Côte d’Ivoire. The delegation’s plane experienced a lack of oxygen, causing some players and staff members to faint during the flight.

Two Gambian players are reported to be in a state of shock. The incident forced the plane to turn back, raising concerns about the team’s safety.

Fortunately, the team, led by coach Tom Saintfielt, safely returned to the ground, and measures are being taken to ensure a smoother arrival at their base camp in Yamoussoukro.

Despite this unsettling experience, the Gambian team, placed in Group C alongside challenging opponents like Senegal, Cameroon, and Guinea Conakry, remains determined to perform well in the tournament.

The incident is expected to strengthen the team’s resolve as they face tough competition in the group stage of the AFCON 2023.
