Football/ Champions League: Barcelona dominate Young Boys with 5-0 Victory

Barcelona rebounded strongly from their opening-day loss to Monaco in the Champions League, crushing Swiss side Young Boys 5-0 in a commanding performance at the Estadi Olímpic. The Catalan giants asserted their dominance early and never looked back, showcasing their superior class on the field in front of an appreciative home crowd.

 

Frenkie de Jong’s return lifts spirits

Beyond the goals, the night was marked by two heartwarming moments for Barça fans. Ansu Fati, in his longest appearance since recovering from injury, flashed glimpses of his old brilliance, reminding everyone of his potential.

 

But the loudest cheer came for Frenkie de Jong, who returned to action after a 162-day absence due to injury.

 

His return was a welcome sight for the Culers, who have missed his presence in the midfield.

 

Adding to the night’s positive atmosphere, 17-year-old La Masia product Andrés Cuenca made his first-team debut, further highlighting Barcelona’s commitment to youth development.

 

Lightning-Fast start sets the tone

Barcelona’s intent was clear from the outset, with the gulf in quality between the two teams immediately evident.

 

The Catalans surged into the lead just eight minutes into the game. A slick combination of passes from Raphinha and Lamine Yamal set up Robert Lewandowski, who coolly slotted home the opener.

 

Despite a brief scare when Ebrima Colley wasted a chance for Young Boys, Barcelona quickly regained control.

 

Raphinha doubled the lead before halftime, smashing in a powerful shot after a chaotic sequence in the Swiss side’s penalty box. Moments later, Iñigo Martinez rose to head home his first goal for the club, putting Barça 3-0 up by the break.

 

Relentless Barça cruise to Victory

The second half saw more of the same, with Barcelona continuing to press forward. Iñigo Martinez was again involved, providing a diving header that set up Lewandowski for his second goal of the night.

The Polish striker, as always, was in the right place at the right time to finish the move with ease.

 

Young Boys had a brief moment of hope when Joël Monteiro hit the crossbar, but it was too little, too late. The game was long beyond their reach. Barcelona added a fifth goal when Mohamed Ali Camara accidentally turned Alejandro Balde’s cross into his own net, capping a dominant performance.

 

Monteiro thought he had scored a consolation goal late on, but it was ruled offside, ensuring Barcelona’s clean sheet.

 

With this emphatic victory, Barcelona not only secured three crucial points but also bolstered their goal difference, which could play a pivotal role in the new Champions League format.

 

Up next for the Catalans in the competition: a high-stakes clash with Bayern Munich on October 23.
