Burkina Faso: President Ibrahim Traoré transforms regional capitals with modern, resilient infrastructure

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is entering a new era of structural transformation, marked by the effective launch of major sanitation projects across several regional capitals. The official kickoff on April 5, 2025, in Bobo-Dioulasso of drainage and stormwater management works is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to act equitably across the country. Unlike previous administrations that focused mainly on Ouagadougou, the current government is breaking away from this centralized approach by heavily investing in secondary cities.

The project, with a total cost of 33 billion CFA francs, is funded by the Burkinabe state with support from the World Bank. It prioritizes urban areas most vulnerable to flooding, specifically Bobo-Dioulasso, Kaya, and Ouahigouya. These cities will benefit from ambitious works: over 15 kilometers of drainage systems in Bobo, 24 kilometers of sanitation networks in Kaya and Ouahigouya, and the installation of a total of 34 kilometers of solar public lighting. Beyond infrastructure, the project also delivers a human and social response, as evidenced by the humanitarian aid provided to vulnerable populations affected in Bobo-Dioulasso. This highlights President Ibrahim Traoré’s holistic vision, which combines sustainable development with solidarity.

This structural initiative is part of a broader strategy launched a year ago by the President of Faso, aimed at modernizing the country’s cities through road construction, sanitation, and urban planning. By initiating simultaneous projects in multiple regions, the government is showing that the entire nation is under construction—not just a single area, as in the past. This inclusive approach strengthens national cohesion, boosts local economies, and prepares cities to face climate and demographic challenges. As the Governor of Hauts-Bassins emphasized, this new direction reflects a clear ambition to build a fair, resilient, and forward-looking Burkina Faso.
