Burkina Faso: Merit now counts with the promotion of 74 non-commissioned officers, symbolizing a revamped army

August 8, 2025, will remain a milestone of achievement for Burkina Faso’s National Armed Forces (FAN). On this day, 74 non-commissioned officers were promoted to the rank of second lieutenant, marking the first special promotion of its kind. This highly symbolic decision reflects the authorities’ firm determination to reward the exceptional merit and commitment of combatants serving on various fronts.

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Faso and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, a new era is unfolding within the Burkinabe military. The practices of favoritism, nepotism, and clan-based appointments, which once undermined troop effectiveness, have been definitively cast aside. From now on, merit alone prevails — with “the right person in the right place” as the guiding principle.
