Burkina Faso: Merit now counts with the promotion of 74 non-commissioned officers, symbolizing a revamped army

August 8, 2025, will remain a milestone of achievement for Burkina Faso’s National Armed Forces (FAN). On this day, 74 non-commissioned officers were promoted to the rank of second lieutenant, marking the first special promotion of its kind. This highly symbolic decision reflects the authorities’ firm determination to reward the exceptional merit and commitment of combatants serving on various fronts.

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Faso and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, a new era is unfolding within the Burkinabe military. The practices of favoritism, nepotism, and clan-based appointments, which once undermined troop effectiveness, have been definitively cast aside. From now on, merit alone prevails — with “the right person in the right place” as the guiding principle.

This promotion is not merely individual recognition; it also embodies a deep structural transformation. It demonstrates the rise of a more professional, disciplined army that is refocused on its core mission: defending the homeland and protecting its people. Tangible results are already visible on the ground, with the recovery and control of most of the national territory.

The 74 new second lieutenants symbolize this gradual victory over terrorism. Their field experience, combined with their new command responsibilities, will undoubtedly strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces. This winning momentum fuels hopes for lasting peace in the Land of Upright People.

Through this initiative, President Ibrahim Traoré reaffirms his vision of a patriotic, modern army fully at the service of the nation. History will remember that, under his leadership, Burkina Faso was able to turn its security challenges into drivers of national renewal, heralding the imminent prospect of total victory over the forces of evil.
