Gabon: Under the leadership of President Oligui Nguema, a country undergoing radical change

Since assuming power, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has set Gabon on a path of profound reforms aimed at breaking with past practices and laying the foundations for a new state. These measures, touching on governance, public integrity, and social justice, seek to bring about radical change after decades of often-criticized administration.

The declared priority has been to restore trust between the state and its citizens. Symbolically, one of the first actions was the revision of the finance law to eliminate tax advantages and privileges for former high institutions; a strong gesture against inequality.

This pursuit of transparency continued with a comprehensive audit of public finances and strategic companies, such as the Gabon Oil Company (GOC), to clarify past management and recover misappropriated funds.

To relieve the cost of living for the most vulnerable, the government reduced prices on certain essential goods and increased school and university scholarships.

In the interest of good governance, the management of natural resources the backbone of the economy is being reconsidered with the goal of better redistributing wealth to benefit the population.

At the same time, a wide-ranging anti-corruption operation has been launched, resulting in the arrest of several figures from the former regime and the recovery of assets.

The drive for integrity also extends to the administration, with efforts to streamline the payment of salaries and pensions.

While the road ahead remains long and the country faces multiple challenges, President Oligui Nguema’s actions have undeniably marked a break in the style of governance.

By placing transparency, justice, and inclusion at the heart of his project, he is attempting to lay the groundwork for a renewed Gabon, where the state realigns itself with the public interest.

The success of this rebuilding effort will be measured by its ability to establish stable institutions and foster broadly shared, lasting prosperity.
