Togo / Proactive diplomacy: Lomé and Minsk seal strategic partnership with visa waiver agreement

In a world constantly seeking new balances, Togo continues to unfold its diplomatic strategy with remarkable consistency, weaving strong ties beyond traditional partnerships. The most recent proof of this dynamic openness is the official visit to Lomé by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Maxim Ryzhenkov.

Received this Monday, March 2, 2026, by his Togolese counterpart, Professor Robert Dussey, the diplomat laid the groundwork for strengthened bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The highlight of this meeting was the signing of a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports.

More than a simple administrative formality, this text is a major strategic tool. By facilitating the free movement of official representatives, it considerably simplifies procedures and creates an environment conducive to smoother and more frequent institutional exchanges.

It is the fertile ground on which concrete projects can germinate, free from the bureaucratic burdens that often hinder international cooperation.

Beyond this agreement, discussions between the two heads of diplomacy allowed for an in-depth exploration of avenues for enhanced partnership.

The agenda of the working session was dense and future-oriented, with the identification of priority sectors where complementarities between Lomé and Minsk are evident.

Agriculture, trade, investment, and education were at the heart of the exchanges, with both parties expressing a common desire to transcend statements of intent to quickly reach structuring framework agreements.

To provide a solid institutional framework for this new impetus, a memorandum of understanding on political consultations was also initialed.

This regular consultation mechanism will allow the two countries to coordinate their positions on major regional and international issues, thereby strengthening their respective weight on the multilateral stage. It is a sign of a relationship that aspires to maturity and durability.

By turning to Belarus, a nation renowned for its excellence in certain industrial and agricultural fields, Togo is diversifying its partnerships and opening new perspectives for its development.

This visa exemption agreement is not an end in itself, but the key that opens the door to denser exchanges, promising investments and skills transfers for the benefit of the Togolese people.

Lomé thus confirms its status as a diplomatic hub and its consistency in forging win-win alliances across the globe.
