Champions League: Semi Final/ Penalty drama in Madrid as Atlético and Arsenal draw

The Champions League semi-final first leg between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal ended in a 1-1 stalemate, both goals coming from the spot. Victor Gyökeres converted for the visitors in the 44th minute, before Julián Álvarez levelled for Atlético in the 56th.

The hosts breathed a sigh of relief in the 78th minute when referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the penalty spot after a foul by David Hancko on Eberechie Eze, only to overturn his decision following a VAR review.

Atlético came close to taking the lead in the 63rd, but the efforts of Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar. Arsenal’s best chance fell to Cristhian Mosquera in the 87th, only for Jan Oblak to produce a superb save.

All remains to play for in Tuesday’s return leg in north London. The winner will face either PSG or Bayern Munich in the Budapest final on 30 May.
