Burkina Faso: AES-ECOWAS – towards a new dynamic of cooperation between the two regional bodies?
The President of Burkina Faso Captain Ibrahim Traoré, met on Monday, May 25, 2026, in Ouagadougou with Lansana Kouyaté, the mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). The courteous meeting could mark a decisive turning point in relations between the two West African organizations.
Following the audience, the mediator said discussions focused on “quite complex issues relating to the security and stability of our countries.”
Without going into details, Kouyaté hinted that the question of a formal framework for dialogue between ECOWAS and the AES was raised; a potential path toward structured talks after a period of diplomatic tensions.

Kouyaté said he is advocating for exemplary cooperation between ECOWAS and the AES in the interest of their populations. “Our peoples need peace and stability. Security, economic, and humanitarian challenges know no borders,” he stressed.
The meeting comes as relations between the AES (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger) and ECOWAS remain complex, marked by disagreements over sovereignty and transition timelines.
However, the recent appointment of a dedicated mediator signals a shared desire to reopen dialogue.
If regular consultations materialize, they could take the form of joint technical meetings on security, exchanges on free movement, or cross-border crisis prevention mechanisms.
The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether this initial rapprochement leads to lasting momentum.
