Burkina Faso prioritizes wheat production in push for food self-sufficiency

In a bold move to achieve food self-sufficiency, Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré has declared wheat production a strategic priority. As part of a broader agro-pastoral and fisheries initiative, the government has introduced measures to boost domestic agricultural capacity and reduce reliance on food imports. This effort is central to a larger plan to modernize the country’s farming sector, with a focus on providing high-quality seeds to local producers.

Key to this initiative is the distribution of improved seeds designed to enhance productivity and withstand local climatic challenges. Agricultural research plays a pivotal role, developing resilient seed varieties tailored to Burkina Faso’s conditions.

Seed producers are receiving increased support to ensure a steady supply of quality seeds, which is expected to lead to higher wheat yields and improved harvests.

President Traoré’s strategy aims not only to secure the nation’s food supply but also to transform agriculture into a driving force for economic growth.

By prioritizing local wheat production and other key crops, the government is laying the groundwork for long-term food security while empowering local farmers and building a more resilient agricultural sector.

This initiative marks a significant step toward reducing Burkina Faso’s vulnerability to external food shocks and fostering sustainable development.
