2026 World Cup Qualifiers: African Powerhouses shine in key matches

The fifth round of African World Cup qualifiers delivered thrilling performances and pivotal results. Egypt solidified their dominance in Group A with a 2-0 win over Ethiopia, courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah and Zizo. The Pharaohs now lead with 13 points, five ahead of Burkina Faso, who crushed Djibouti 4-1.

In Group F, Ivory Coast narrowly edged Burundi 1-0, reclaiming the top spot with 13 points, just ahead of Gabon. Meanwhile, Ghana stormed to a 5-0 victory against Chad in Group I, leapfrogging Madagascar to take the lead with 13 points.

Algeria impressed in Group G, defeating Botswana 3-1 thanks to a brace from Mohamed Amoura and a goal by Amine Gouiri.

The Fennecs now top the group on goal difference. In contrast, Guinea’s hopes took a hit after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Somalia, leaving them five points adrift.

Nigeria reignited their campaign in Group C with a 2-0 win over Rwanda, powered by Victor Osimhen’s double. However, South Africa leads the group with 10 points after a 2-0 victory against Lesotho.

In Group E, Morocco continued their flawless run, defeating Niger 2-1. The Atlas Lions, led by Ashraf Hakimi, now hold a commanding six-point lead at the top.

As the qualifiers progress, African football giants are asserting their dominance, while others face mounting pressure to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
